Arabica vs Robusta: Which Coffee Is Better?

Nearly all coffee is one of two species: Coffea arabica or Coffea canephora (Robusta). India grows both. Neither is simply "better" - they're built for different jobs.

When to Choose Arabica

  • You drink coffee black and want aroma and nuance.
  • Pour over, French press, drip - brew methods that show off origin character.
  • You find Robusta harsh.

Karadykan Estate Coffee

Shade-grown Arabica, chocolate and citrus - a good example of what Arabica does well.

Koraput, Odisha Washed Coffee

Clean, bright, low bitterness - Arabica at its most drinkable.

When to Choose Robusta (or a Blend)

  • You take coffee with milk and sugar and want it to cut through.
  • South Indian filter or espresso - Robusta adds body, crema and a stronger kick.
  • You want more caffeine for less money.

Filter Coffee (70% Arabica, 30% Robusta)

The classic blend: Arabica for aroma, Robusta for strength and body. Better with milk than either bean alone.

Custom Arabica-Robusta Blend

Set your own ratio from 95:5 to 70:30 and find your balance.

The Honest Answer

For black coffee and filter/pour-over at home, Arabica or a high-Arabica blend usually wins. For milk coffee, espresso and maximum caffeine per rupee, some Robusta earns its place. Most great filter and espresso blends use both.
