Best Coffee for Athletes and Endurance Sports

Caffeine is on every sports scientist's short list of things that actually work. It improves endurance, repeated-sprint ability, maximal power, and - maybe most usefully - it lowers rating of perceived exertion, so hard efforts feel easier. Coffee delivers it as effectively as a caffeine pill, and it's not banned (WADA removed caffeine from the prohibited list in 2004).

Caffeine figures below assume a strong 30 g dose of grounds per cup.

How Athletes Should Use Coffee

  • Dose: 3-6 mg per kg bodyweight. Most benefit is at the low end; higher just adds side effects.
  • Timing: 45-60 minutes before the session or event.
  • Endurance events: a top-up (1-2 mg/kg) late in a long race can help.
  • Tolerance: keep habitual intake modest, or taper for 2-4 days before a key event, so race-day caffeine hits harder.
  • Test it in training first. Never try a new dose on race day - GI issues are the classic mistake.
