Best Coffee for a Morning Workout

An early workout is the hardest one to caffeinate for - you're barely awake and there's no time to sip a cup slowly. The move is a strong coffee the moment you get up, so it's peaking in your blood by the time you're warmed up (caffeine takes 30-45 minutes to peak).

Caffeine figures below assume a strong 30 g dose of grounds per cup.

The Morning Routine

  • Drink it immediately on waking, black, while you get changed.
  • Make it strong - one solid cup, ~3 mg caffeine per kg bodyweight. No time for two.
  • Keep it black. Milk and sugar sit heavy when you train soon after.
  • If you train fasted, that's fine - black coffee doesn't break it and may help fat oxidation.

The Picks

Filter Coffee (70% Arabica, 30% Robusta)

Brews fast and strong as a decoction, high caffeine from the Robusta share. The most efficient morning pre-workout.

Caffeine: ~490 mg per 30 g cup70% Arabica / 30% Robusta

Vienna Roast Coffee

A bold dark roast that wakes you up on taste alone - good for a 5:30 am start.

Basic Black Coffee

Gentle on an empty stomach if you train fasted - brew it double-strength.

Biccode Estate Coffee

Medium-intensity and easy on the stomach for early sessions before breakfast.

If You Have 20 Minutes

Drink the coffee, then do your mobility/warm-up and commute. By the time you hit the first working set it's peaking. That's the ideal - the caffeine and the workout line up.
