Best Strong Filter Coffee

A strong filter coffee comes from three things: more Robusta in the blend, a thicker decoction, and less dilution with water or milk. Roast level barely changes the caffeine - it's the bean and the brew.

Caffeine figures below assume a strong 30 g dose of grounds per cup.

The Strongest Blends

Filter Coffee (70% Arabica, 30% Robusta)

The traditional ratio, and the strongest fixed blend - full-bodied, high caffeine, stands up to lots of milk.

Caffeine: ~490 mg per 30 g cup70% Arabica / 30% Robusta

Custom Arabica-Robusta Blend (70:30)

Dial it to maximum Robusta for the strongest cup you can order.

Caffeine: ~490 mg per 30 g cup70% Arabica / 30% Robusta

Filter Coffee (80% Arabica, 20% Robusta)

A step down in strength but still well above pure Arabica, with a bit more aroma.

Caffeine: ~455 mg per 30 g cup80% Arabica / 20% Robusta

Brewing a Strong Decoction

  1. Use 3 tablespoons of powder per cup, pressed firm with the tamper.
  2. Fill the top chamber with water just off the boil, cover.
  3. Let it drip fully - 15-25 minutes. A rushed decoction is thin and weak.
  4. Mix roughly 1 part decoction to 2 parts hot milk (less milk than usual), and go easy on sugar so the strength comes through.

A Note on Caffeine

Around 400 mg a day is the common safe ceiling for healthy adults - a couple of strong 30 g Robusta-heavy filter cups gets you there. Past that it's jitters, not more energy.
