Best Time to Drink Black Coffee
Timing affects sleep, focus and how well coffee works before exercise. Here's when to drink black coffee - and when to stop.

When you drink black coffee changes how well it works and how much it costs you in sleep. Caffeine peaks in your blood 30-45 minutes after a cup and has a half-life of roughly 5-6 hours - meaning a 4 pm coffee still has a quarter of its caffeine in you at 10 pm.
Best Times
- Mid to late morning (9:30-11:30 am). Cortisol is already high right when you wake, so a cup an hour or two later gives a cleaner lift and may reduce tolerance build-up. This is the single best slot for most people.
- 30-60 minutes before exercise. Caffeine improves endurance, power and perceived effort - time it so it peaks as you start.
- Early afternoon dip (1-3 pm). A small cup here fights the post-lunch slump without ruining your night.
Times to Avoid
- The moment you wake. It works, but you're partly masking grogginess that fades on its own, and it can steepen the mid-morning crash.
- After ~2 pm if you're caffeine-sensitive, after ~4 pm for most people. Later than that and sleep quality drops even if you fall asleep fine.
- On a completely empty stomach if it upsets you - pair it with breakfast.
For Specific Goals
- Weight loss: a cup before a morning walk or workout.
- Focus for study/work: a moderate cup every 3-4 hours, last one by mid-afternoon.
- Night shift: front-load at the start, small top-ups, none in the last few hours before you plan to sleep.
