Is Black Coffee Good for You?

For most healthy adults, moderate black coffee - around 2 to 4 cups a day - is not just harmless but associated with some benefits in large population studies. It's close to calorie-free and contains hundreds of plant compounds, including chlorogenic acids and antioxidants. This isn't medical advice, and coffee affects people differently, but here's what the evidence generally supports.

What the Research Associates With Coffee

  • Alertness, reaction time and short-term focus - well established, from caffeine.
  • Better exercise performance - endurance and perceived effort improve with caffeine pre-workout.
  • Lower risk of type 2 diabetes - consistent in observational data, mechanism not fully clear.
  • Better liver markers - regular coffee is linked to lower rates of fatty liver and liver fibrosis.
  • Lower all-cause mortality in moderate drinkers, in several large cohort studies.

These are associations, not guarantees, and they apply to black coffee - adding sugar and cream changes the picture.

The Downsides

  • Sleep. Caffeine has a ~5-hour half-life; afternoon coffee costs sleep quality.
  • Anxiety and palpitations in sensitive people or at high doses.
  • Pregnancy - most guidance caps caffeine at ~200 mg/day.
  • Acid reflux - coffee can worsen it for some.

Keep It Simple

Drink it black, keep it to 2-4 cups, finish by mid-afternoon, and skip it if it makes you jittery or wrecks your sleep.
