Black Coffee Benefits: What the Research Says
From alertness and exercise performance to liver and metabolic markers, here are the evidence-backed benefits of black coffee - and the caveats.

Black coffee - just coffee and water, no milk or sugar - has a genuinely good evidence base for a few things and a lot of hype for others. Here's the honest split. None of this is medical advice.
Well-Supported Benefits
- Alertness and focus. Caffeine blocks adenosine, improving reaction time, vigilance and short-term recall. Reliable and immediate.
- Exercise performance. A pre-workout cup improves endurance, power output and how hard effort feels - one of the most replicated findings in sports science.
- Near-zero calories. ~2-5 kcal per cup, so it's a good swap for sugary drinks when managing weight.
- Appetite. A mild, short-lived reduction in hunger.
Associated (Population Studies, Not Proof)
- Lower risk of type 2 diabetes.
- Lower rates of fatty liver and liver fibrosis.
- Lower all-cause mortality in moderate drinkers.
- Possible links to lower risk of Parkinson's and some liver cancers.
These come from observational data - people who drink moderate coffee tend to do better, but the studies can't prove coffee is the cause.
Overstated
- "Boosts metabolism to burn fat" - real but small (a few dozen calories) and fades with tolerance.
- "Detoxes" or "cleanses" - no.
- "Fat-burning coffee" products - the coffee isn't doing anything a normal black coffee wouldn't.
