Decaf Coffee in India: What to Know

Decaf coffee has had most - not all - of its caffeine removed before roasting. A cup of decaf still has roughly 2-5 mg of caffeine, versus 80-150+ mg in regular coffee. It's for people who like the ritual and taste of coffee but need to avoid caffeine, in the evening or entirely.

How Decaffeination Works

  • Swiss Water / Mountain Water process - uses only water and carbon filters, no solvents. The cleanest method, and what most specialty decaf uses.
  • CO2 process - pressurised carbon dioxide extracts the caffeine. Also solvent-free.
  • Solvent processes (methylene chloride / ethyl acetate) - effective and considered safe by regulators, but many buyers prefer to avoid them.

Look for "Swiss Water" or "CO2 decaffeinated" on the bag if the method matters to you.

Does Decaf Taste Worse?

Older decaf did. Modern decaf, well roasted and fresh, is close to regular - slightly less aromatic and a touch flatter, but perfectly good. Freshness matters even more with decaf, since it's already at a flavour disadvantage.

Gray Cup Doesn't Sell Decaf (Yet)

If you're cutting caffeine down rather than out, lower-caffeine options help:

Filter Coffee (70% Arabica, 30% Chicory)

Chicory has no caffeine, so this blend delivers noticeably less per cup than a straight coffee.

Halflong Assam Coffee

A pure-Arabica single origin - Arabica has about half the caffeine of Robusta, so an Arabica cup is already on the lower end.

Halflong Assam Coffee

You can also simply use less coffee per cup, or switch your afternoon cup to a chicory blend.

Decaf still has a little caffeine; choose a Swiss Water or CO2 process. If you're only cutting back, a chicory blend or a smaller dose does the job.
