Chicory has no caffeine, so every percent of chicory in your powder removes caffeine from the cup. This guide gives the numbers for a standard 30g cup of Arabica-based filter coffee.
Caffeine by Chicory Percentage
| Blend | Caffeine per 30g cup |
|---|---|
| 100% Arabica | about 390 mg |
| 90:10 | about 350 mg |
| 80:20 | about 310 mg |
| 70:30 | about 275 mg |
| 60:40 | about 235 mg |
| 50:50 | about 195 mg |
Figures use about 1,300 mg of caffeine per 100g of Arabica grounds, a rough reference value. Real cups vary with brew strength and how much powder you use.
Caffeine: ~310 mg per 30 g cup80% coffee / 20% chicory
What This Means
- A 60:40 blend gives about 40% less caffeine than 100% Arabica in the same weight of powder.
- Filter coffee is also diluted with milk, but the caffeine is still all there. Milk changes the taste, not the caffeine.
- If you drink several cups a day and want less caffeine without giving up the ritual, moving from 80:20 to 60:40 is the easiest step.
- If you want the most caffeine, choose a lower-chicory blend or a pure Arabica one. Robusta has about double the caffeine of Arabica.
