Best Coffee for Espresso at Home

Espresso concentrates everything - flavour, body, acidity and defects. For a forgiving home shot you want a fresh, bold, medium-dark roast, and often a little Robusta for crema and a fuller mouthfeel. Very light, acidic roasts can pull sharp and thin on a home machine without a lot of dialling in.

What Works for Home Espresso

  • Medium-dark roast - sweeter, rounder, more forgiving under pressure.
  • A little Robusta (10-30%) - thicker crema, more body, more caffeine. Optional but classic.
  • Fresh - within 3 weeks of roast, rested at least 4-5 days after roasting.
  • Fine grind, ~1:2 ratio (18 g in, 36 g out) in 25-32 seconds. Adjust grind to hit the time.

The Picks

Filter Coffee (70% Arabica, 30% Robusta)

Ground fine, this classic blend pulls a thick, punchy shot with real crema.

Caffeine: ~490 mg per 30 g cup70% Arabica / 30% Robusta

French Roast Coffee

Deep and bittersweet - a bold single-roast espresso with low acidity.

French Roast Coffee

Vienna Roast Coffee

A touch lighter than French, still rich and forgiving for milk drinks.

Vienna Roast Coffee

Custom Arabica-Robusta Blend

Dial in your own crema-vs-aroma balance - 80:20 is a good espresso starting point.

Caffeine: ~455 mg per 30 g cup80% Arabica / 20% Robusta

Milk Drinks

For flat whites and cappuccinos, lean darker and toward more Robusta - the coffee needs to cut through milk. For straight shots, a cleaner medium-dark Arabica-forward roast tastes better.
