Best Coffee for Moka Pot
A moka pot brews strong, near-espresso coffee on the stove. It wants a fine-ish grind and a bold, low-acid roast. Here are the best coffees for a moka pot.

The moka pot (stovetop "Bialetti") forces steam-pressurised water up through a bed of coffee. It's not true espresso - the pressure is much lower - but it makes a strong, concentrated, near-espresso cup. It suits bold, low-acid roasts, and a grind between filter and espresso.
What Works in a Moka Pot
- Medium-dark to dark roast - the concentration amplifies acidity, so bright light roasts can taste sour and sharp.
- Fine-ish grind - finer than filter, coarser than espresso. Too fine clogs and builds dangerous pressure.
- Fill the basket level, don't tamp. Moka pots want loose grounds.
- Take it off the heat as soon as it splutters, and cool the base under a tap to stop extraction.
The Picks
French Roast Coffee
Deep and smoky with very low acidity - a classic moka pot match.

Vienna Roast Coffee
A shade lighter than French, still bold enough to stand up to the concentration.

Filter Coffee (70% Arabica, 30% Robusta)
The Robusta share gives body and a fuller crema-like layer - and it's ground fine, close to what a moka pot wants.
Basic Black Coffee
A balanced everyday option for a straightforward stovetop cup.

Quick Method
- Fill the base with hot water to just below the valve.
