How to Choose Coffee: A Simple Buying Guide

Choosing coffee comes down to five decisions. Get these right and almost any bag will make a good cup.

1. Species: Arabica or Robusta

  • Arabica - smoother, aromatic, more acidity, less caffeine. Best for black and filter/pour-over.
  • Robusta - stronger, more bitter, heavier, ~2x caffeine. Best with milk, in espresso blends, and for South Indian filter.

Most people want Arabica or a high-Arabica blend. See Arabica vs Robusta.

2. Roast Level

  • Light / medium - keeps origin flavour and acidity; best black.
  • Medium-dark - balanced and forgiving; black or milk.
  • Dark (Vienna / French) - bold, roasty, low acidity; espresso and strong milk coffee.

3. Process

Washed = clean and bright. Natural = fruity and heavy. Honey/HSD = sweet, in between.

4. Grind

Match it to your brew: coarse for French press, medium for pour over/drip, fine for filter, extra-fine for espresso. Whole beans + a grinder is the single biggest quality upgrade.

5. Freshness

Look for a roast date, not just a best-before. Coffee is best 5-21 days off roast. Buy 250-500 g at a time and keep it airtight, away from heat and light.
