Pour-Over, Aeropress & French Press Filters Guide
Paper, metal or mesh - the filter you use with a pour-over, Aeropress or French press changes body and clarity. Here's how to choose.

Most manual brewers give you a choice of filter, and that choice matters more than people expect. The same beans, same grind, same water - just swap paper for metal - and the cup changes in body and clarity. Here's what each method's filter options actually do.
Pour-Over Coffee Filters: Paper vs Metal
A pour-over dripper (V60, Kalita, Chemex) is usually sold with paper filters, but reusable metal mesh inserts are common too.
- Paper traps almost all coffee oils and fine particles, giving a cleaner, lighter-bodied, brighter cup. It's also the more forgiving option for beginners since it filters out over-extracted fines.
- Metal lets oils and some fines through, producing a fuller-bodied, heavier cup closer to what you'd get from a French press, but with less sediment.
Neither is more "correct" - it's a body-vs-clarity tradeoff. If you want your pour-over to taste distinct from a French press, paper is the better choice; if you like a fuller cup without full French-press sediment, metal.
Aeropress Filters: Paper, Metal and the "Clear" Model
The Aeropress ships with small paper filter discs, but reusable metal mesh filters are one of the most common upgrades.
- Paper Aeropress filters give the cleanest cup the Aeropress can produce - light body, very little sediment, closest to a delicate pour-over.
- Metal Aeropress filters (sometimes called an Aeropress mesh filter) let more oils through, giving a heavier, more French-press-like cup with a bit of fine sediment at the bottom - reusable, so no ongoing cost, but need rinsing after each use.
- Clear Aeropress / metal Aeropress as product names usually refer to newer Aeropress models with a clear plastic body or a bundled metal filter rather than a different brewing mechanism - the filter choice inside still works the same way regardless of the body material.
French Press Filters: The Built-In Mesh Plunger
A French press doesn't use a swappable filter at all - the plunger itself is a fine metal mesh that presses the grounds to the bottom of the carafe. This is why French press coffee is naturally full-bodied and has some sediment: the mesh is coarser than paper by design, letting oils and fine particles through. A slightly coarser grind helps here, since fine grounds can slip past the mesh and end up in the cup.
Moka Pot Filters
A moka pot's "filter" is the small metal disc basket that holds the grounds between the water chamber and the upper collection chamber, plus a fine mesh filter plate just above it that catches larger particles as pressurised steam pushes coffee up and through. It's a fixed metal filter, not swappable - there's no paper or reusable choice here, just the basket itself, which is why moka pot coffee tends to be strong and slightly gritty compared to drip methods.
Cold Brew Filters and Bags
Cold brew is usually made by steeping coarse grounds in cold water for 12-24 hours, then filtering the whole batch at once - either through a paper filter, a fine mesh strainer, or a dedicated cold brew filter bag (a reusable cloth or nylon sock you steep the grounds inside, then simply lift out). Cold brew bags are the least messy option since there's no separate straining step - just steep, lift, and pour.
Choosing a Filter Doesn't Replace Choosing a Bean
Filter material changes texture and clarity, but it can't add flavour that isn't in the coffee to begin with. Coarser grinds generally pair better with metal filters and French press; finer grinds suit paper and moka pots.
